The National Power Corporation (NPC), also known as NAPOCOR, is a government-owned and controlled corporation established on November 3, 1936 under Commonwealth Act No. 120. It was originally created as a non-stock public corporation to develop and utilize the country’s hydroelectric resources.

1936
Creation of the National Power Corporation — Established under Commonwealth Act No. 120 on November 3, 1936 as a non-stock government corporation tasked to develop hydroelectric resources in the Philippines.
1960
Conversion into a Government-Owned Stock Corporation — Converted into a wholly government-owned stock corporation under Republic Act No. 2641, strengthening its financial and operational capacity.
1971
Revised Charter of NPC — Republic Act No. 6395 was enacted, revising the charter of NPC, expanding its powers, and decentralizing operations across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
1972
National Electrification Program — Presidential Decree No. 40 mandated NPC to implement nationwide electrification through the development of transmission grids and generating facilities.
1974
Direct Supervision by the Office of the President — Presidential Decree No. 380 placed NPC under the Office of the President to enhance efficiency in energy and water resource management.
1980
Centralized Power Generation and Transmission — NPC operated as a vertically integrated entity managing nationwide power generation and transmission systems.
1988
Expansion to Missionary Areas — NPC assumed operations of power generation facilities in remote areas and electric cooperatives, supporting rural electrification efforts.
2001
Power Sector Reform (EPIRA Law) — Republic Act No. 9136 (Electric Power Industry Reform Act of 2001) restructured the power industry, privatized assets, and created PSALM and TRANSCO. NPC retained missionary electrification and watershed management functions.
2003
Transfer of Transmission Functions — Transmission operations were transferred to the National Transmission Corporation (TRANSCO) as part of EPIRA implementation.
2026
Missionary Electrification and Asset Management — NPC continues to provide electricity to off-grid and remote areas through the Small Power Utilities Group (SPUG) and manages watershed areas and remaining power assets.
