The Light Rail Transit Authority is recognized as the premiere rail transit in the country providing reliable, efficient, dependable, and environment-friendly mass rail services to all residents of Metro Manila. LRTA is a wholly owned government corporation created on July 12, 1980 under Executive Order (EO) No. 603, as amended by EO No. 830 dated September 1982, and EO No. 210 dated July 7, 1987. The LRTA is primarily responsible for the construction, operation, maintenance and/or lease of light rail transit systems in the Philippines. A pioneer of the industry since 1984, LRTA has become the country’s prime mover in the rail transport sector serving the needs of millions of Filipinos by exploring avenues where the LRT system could continuously provide efficient transport services while promoting economy and efficiency of operations.

Milestones

1888Inauguration of Manila’s oncemighty Tranvia (streetcar), covering 16.3 km as one of Asia's earliest urban rail transit systems, begun its Manila-Malabon Line with a stretch of 16.3km.
1980Establishment of the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) by virtue of Executive Order No. 603 dated July 12, 1980.
1984Official opening of LRT Line 1, operating from Baclaran Station to Central Station.
1997Official groundbreaking ceremony marking the beginning of LRT Line 2 construction.
1998Arrival of the 2 Generation Trainsets for LRT Line 1.
1999Launch of the LRT Line 1 Capacity Expansion Project to handle growing passenger volume.
2001Introduction of the Automated Fare Collection System (AFCS) using magnetic swipe cards.
2003Official start of commercial operations for LRT Line 2.
2006Arrival of the 3rd Generation Trainsets for LRT Line 1.
2007Comprehensive modernization of LRT Line 1 systems and infrastructure.
2010Commercial operations launch for the LRT Line 1 North Extension (reaching Balintawak and Roosevelt).
2015Transition of LRT Line 1 operations and maintenance to Private Sector - Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC).
2017Groundbreaking ceremony held for the LRT Line 2 East Extension Project.
2019LRTA achieved the ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System (QMS) Certification.
2021Inauguration and commercial opening of the Line 2 East Extension, adding 2 new stations (Marikina-Pasig Station and Antipolo Station).
2022LRT Line 2 achieved 10 fully operational trainsets following the completion of the Train Propulsion System upgrade.
2023Official inauguration of 4th Generation Light Rail Vehicles (LRVs) for LRT Line 1.
2023LRTA successful Certification for ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System (QMS).
2024Inauguration and partial commercial operation of LRT Line 1 South (Cavite) Extension Project Phase 1.
2025LRTA successfully continued the Recertification of ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System (QMS).
2025LRT Line 2 Launch the "Pamilya Pass 1+3" promotional program for passengers.
2025LRT Line 2 Launch the implementation of the expanded 50% fare discount for Senior Citizens, PWDs, and Students.
2026Official launch of fully integrated cashless payment systems across LRT Line 2 stations.
